TIE and NIE in Spain: The Difference and How to Get Them

~3 min read

NIE and TIE are the most commonly confused terms in Spanish immigration: the NIE is just a number assigned once for life, while the TIE is the physical resident card carrying that number, a photo and a fingerprint. Holding an NIE does not make you a legal resident of Spain - only the TIE proves that.

NIE: what it is and why you need it

The NIE (Número de Identidad de Extranjero) is a foreigner’s identification number in Spain. It is assigned once and stays the same for life, regardless of how many times your immigration status changes. You need an NIE for nearly any official transaction in Spain: opening a bank account, buying property or a car, signing an employment contract, handling an inheritance, registering a business or paying taxes. It is important to understand that the NIE is only a number, not a status - it does not prove the right to live in Spain and is not a substitute for a residence permit.

TIE: what it is and how it differs from NIE

The TIE (Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero) is the physical plastic resident card, showing a photo, a fingerprint and details of your current residence authorisation. It is the TIE, not the bare NIE number, that proves legal status in Spain. You can only get a TIE on the basis of an approved residence permit: without one, you cannot obtain the card, even if you already hold an NIE from a previous transaction or visit.

How to get an NIE

If you are not planning to move to Spain and only need the number for a one-off transaction, you can obtain an NIE in two ways:

If you are applying for a visa or a residence permit, the NIE is assigned automatically as part of that process - there is no need to request it separately.

How to get the TIE

The TIE is issued only after your residence permit is approved. You have 1 month from the approval notice to apply. The procedure: book an appointment through the Policía Nacional’s “Extranjería” system, attend with form EX-17, your passport, a photo and the paid fee (modelo 790, código 012), and have your fingerprints taken. The finished card is collected in person on the assigned date.

Frequent questions and misconceptions

The most common misconception is assuming that holding an NIE alone gives the right to live and work in Spain. It does not: many people hold an NIE without ever being residents of Spain, such as foreign property owners. Another frequent confusion is trying to “renew” or “change” the NIE - the number has no expiry date and is never reissued; only the TIE card is updated when the residence permit expires or the card is lost.

Losing or having your TIE stolen

If the card was stolen, a police report (denuncia) is mandatory before a replacement can be issued. For an ordinary loss, filing a report is also strongly recommended, since it serves as the official basis for the request. You then need to book an EX-17 appointment, bring your passport and a photo, and pay the fee. The new card typically takes 30-45 days to issue. If the card is lost outside Spain, report it to the local police and contact the Spanish consulate - re-entering Spain may require a visa or a salvoconducto (temporary travel document).

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between NIE and TIE?

The NIE (Número de Identidad de Extranjero) is an identification number assigned once and never changed. The TIE (Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero) is a physical card showing a photo, fingerprint and your current residence authorisation. Every foreigner doing business in Spain has an NIE, but only legal residents hold a TIE.

Does an NIE give the right to live in Spain?

No. You can obtain an NIE without moving to Spain at all, for one-off transactions such as buying property, registering a car, handling an inheritance, or opening a bank account. Only the TIE, issued on the basis of an approved residence permit, proves the right to live and work in Spain.

How do you book a TIE appointment?

Through the Policía Nacional's appointment system (the 'Extranjería' section, procedure 'Expedición de TIE') or your Autonomous Community's electronic office. Slots fill up fast, so check the system regularly, including at unusual hours when cancelled appointments tend to reopen.

What should you do if you lose your TIE card?

First file a police report (mandatory if it was stolen, strongly advisable if lost) - it is the basis for requesting a replacement. Then file form EX-17 with your passport, a photo and the paid fee (modelo 790, código 012). The NIE number itself does not change or get duplicated - only the card is reissued.
